Breast Augmentation Surgery Explained

Breast augmentation is a procedure used to enlarge small breasts and create a balance for breasts of different size or proportion. Breast implants are used to add fullness to breasts that have decreased in size or begun to sag due to age or pregnancy.

Breast implant options basically can be narrowed down to two types: silicone gel and saline (or salt water) filled. Most breast enlargement procedures use saline-filled implants; although some situations still warrant the use of silicone gel implants for best results. Recent advantages in implant technologies offer options that create a more natural look than ever before.

It remains that with any elective cosmetic surgery, it is very important for women considering this procedure to be given informed consent. This means that anyone considering having permanent implantation of a medical device is made aware not only of the risks of the operation itself, but also of the lifelong risks of having implants.

Be sure to consult with a plastic surgeon, and do your research to ensure you fully understand the procedure, its risks and what to expect from the surgery. There are many excellent websites offering up information on breast augmentation. The best website I have found in my research is Lookingyourbest.com - a free to use website that provides a great amount of in depth plastic surgery information and there is even a free service to help anyone considering breast augmentation locate a skilled , experienced and qualified plastic surgeon in their area.

Breast Augmentation Basics

One decision more and more women are making everyday is to have cosmetic surgery in particular breast enhancement surgery (a procedure to enhance the size of your breasts by using implants – saline implants or silicone implants.) Implants are indicated for females where the patient is at least 18 years of age, and for reconstruction of the female breast. A plastic surgeon is able to increase a woman's bust line by one or more bra cup sizes. Advances in technology and surgical technique are making cosmetic surgery a popular option among women of all ages desiring a change in the way they look. The decision to undergo breast enhancement surgery may result in a more flattering, better proportioned figure, more clothing options, and may enhance your confidence and self-esteem.

Many women desiring breast augmentation never fully developed and have been self-conscious of their appearance since youth. Others have had children and noticed significant shrinkage and sagging of the breast tissue following childbirth or breast-feeding. Other still just simply want an enlargement or have more fullness to the breasts. All these women have the desire to look proportional and feel attractive.

Most women know that they want to look better, but they don't know how to get there. If they are happy with the position of the breasts are, usually a breast implant is the answer. If they start to have some droop to the breast, then the recommendations may change depending on how much droop there is.

Breast enlargement also known as breast augmentation is one of the most commonly requested aesthetic operations. Most women undergo this type of surgery because they want to feel better about their appearance.

Some women choose to have breast augmentation surgery to improve their self image. Some feel dissatisfied because their breasts never developed to a size that meets their expectations. Others want to bring balance to a breast that is somewhat smaller than the other. Often women want the procedure to restore their natural breast volume, which may have decreased as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, aging or even breast cancer surgery.

During your initial consultation, you will be encouraged to discuss your desires, fears, expectations, and goals. The first and foremost objective is the creation of breasts that you envision yourself with. In addition to increasing breast size, your plastic surgeon will strive to create a more aesthetically pleasing breast by improving shape, balance, and proportion.

As with any surgical procedure, it is highly recommended that you do your research and consult with a qualified and skilled doctor such as Byran Texas Plastic Surgeon Dr Malcolm Rude. Reasons Women Explore Breast Enhancement

There are many personal reasons that women explore breast enhancement — a desire for larger breasts, to restore pre-pregnancy volume, or to just return to a more youthful appearance. A woman's satisfaction with the shape and size of her breast can help define her self image. Having a positive body image is important. Many women who experience breast augmentation are more confident in their body posture more comfortable in the way they look in their clothing, and can have a better quality of life.

An ideal candidate for breast augmentation is a woman who has specific concerns regarding the size and shape of her breast, and realistic expectations regarding her results. Equally important is that she is well informed and educated on the changes she is making on her breast size; and that the decision is self motivated, non impulsive or pressured by her partner.

When choosing an implant size, many factors such as body type and shape come into play. Proportional body measurements should be taken into account to achieve a total body balance. Breast augmentation not only is about a larger cup size, it is about enhancing the aesthetics, beauty of the breast, and body as a whole.

Breast Augmentation uses breast implants which are either filled with a saline solution or silicone gel. Saline implants are most commonly used as the use of silicone implants has been restricted. This is because the rupture of a silicone implant may release the silicone material into the body's tissues which is a significant health concern. If saline implants rupture, the saline solution is harmlessly reabsorbed into the body and the implant can be replaced.

Be sure to consult with your chosen plastic surgeon and have all your questions answered regarding the surgery procedure and traveling. It is also a good idea to research your desired surgical procedure beforehand, to ensure you fully understand all aspect of the procedure. There is a large number of plastic surgery websites on the internet, the best one I have found is lookingyourbest.com. This is a free website the boasts a wealth of in depth and accurate plastic surgery information and they also offer a free service to help you locate experienced and qualified plastic surgeons in your area and around the country.

Plastic Surgery Q&A - Breast Enhancement

My wife wants larger breasts, but does not want to use silicone implants due to the possible dangers. Are there any other options?

There are now a few different types of breast implant, the first being a saline filled implant which very safe for use as it is filled with a saltwater solution called saline. If a Saline breast implant ruptures, the salt water solution is absorbed by the body.

The second and third types are both silicone filled - the first of these is the standard silicone filled breast implant. In the Early 90's the FDA called for restrictions on use of the original silicone filled implant so the safety of this device could be evaluated. The restrictions have since been removed, and the original silicone breast implant has been deemed safe for use. However, there is still a small chance these implants can rupture, and the silicone can leak out of the the implant. A ruptured silicone filled implant requires surgery to clear the leaking silicone and replace the implant. This is what I imagine your wife wants to avoid, and thus the reason she does not want to use this type of implant.

The third type of implant is known as the 410 style Cohesive Gel or "Gummy Bear" implant. The gummy bear implant is also silicone, but the difference is in the physical make-up of the implant. The Cohesive Gel is firmer, yet still natural feeling. In case of a rupture, the Cohesive Gel will not leak or run. This is achieved during the manufacturing process by adding additional "Cross linker", which causes the Silicone to become firmer. In fact, when a Gummy Bear implant is cut in half, the implant does not leak, or come apart - the gel remains intact.

I recommend consulting with a board certified and experienced specialist, such as Orange County plastic surgeon Dr Dan Mills. Be sure to have all you questions answered. Ensure you do your research and learn all you can about your breast procedure. There are plenty of plastic surgery information resources available online.

The Latest News from the World of Plastic Surgery

While surfing the internet and reading news stories, I found these plastic surgery news items and thought I would discuss them a bit here:

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has just recently released statistics that show Breast Augmentation Surgery has surpassed Liposuction becoming the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the U.S. More than 350,000 Breast Implant surgeries were performed in 2008. The gain in popularity is no doubt related to the the FDA allowing Doctors and surgeons to use silicone implants in breast surgery.

As more and more women are losing significant amounts of weight, many of these women are also electing to have Breast Enlargement Surgery. This trend seems to be strong in Houston Texas. After massive weight loss, it is common to see women having breast implant surgery to restore lost breast volume. Houston Plastic Surgeon Dr Bruce Smith is also seeing this trend with his patients.

Changing Facial Symmetry with Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under twilight or general anesthesia in an outpatient setting. In most procedures, the skin of the nose is lifted away from the bone and cartilage framework beneath, which is then shaped and sculpted as desired. (Some doctors elect to make the incision from inside the nose, depending on the nature of the surgery.) The skin is then re-draped over the "new" framework, and a splint is applied to help your nose maintain its new form. In some cases, nasal packs or soft splints may be inserted in the nostrils to provide additional stability.

Following surgery, bruising, swelling and discomfort can be expected, but all can be alleviated with cold compresses and medication prescribed by your doctor. (The most visible swelling and bruising are usually gone within two weeks.) Splints, stitches and packing are removed in about a week, and you can usually return to work or non-strenuous activities within a week or two. Strenuous activities may be resumed within four to six weeks.

Of all plastic surgery procedures, nose enhancement, or rhinoplasty, is among the most common. Nose enhancement surgery can be performed on any part of the nose, to increase or reduce its size; to modify the size and shape of the nostrils, tip or bridge of the nose; or to alter the slope or angle of the nose.
